Kids Chasing Bass December 28 2016

When my son and I fish, he has a way that he likes to fish and I have a way that I like to fish. So, having two different varieties of techniques, he likes fishing with traps and I like jigging, there are a couple of lakes that we fish that don’t adhere as easily to both methods.

We typically will alternate our choices of lakes and since our last outing was for jigging crappies, his choice was to run traps for bass. This particular lake has a good population of largemouth and smallmouth bass and also jumbo perch, but the sunfish are small and there isn’t any crappies in the lake.

First Ice December 26 2016

First ice is always a special time and all of the excitement has finally come to a realization that we are going to be wetting a line on the hard water once again. Ice season is a very special time and I get to spend many days out there with my fishing partner, my son.

We typically have to drive north for first ice and have a few lakes that we will target at first and last ice and there is a good population of crappie that swim there.

Conditional Shellfishing Area "Conimicut Triangle" Reopens

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced today the Conimicut Triangle in Upper Narragansett Bay will reopen to shellfish harvesting at sunrise tomorrow, Friday December 23. The opening comes more than two days earlier than expected.

Trout Stocking Wraps Up Next Week for the Winter Season

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) announced today it will complete its winter season trout stocking next week. Some 1,200 rainbow and brook trout will be released into Olney Pond, Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln; Upper Mellville Pond, Portsmouth; Carbuncle Pond, Coventry; Breakheart Pond, Arcadia Management Area in Exeter; and the Roundtop Ponds in Burrillville.

2016 New Hampshire Turkey Virus Monitoring Update

This was the fifth year biologists were recording evidence of avian pox virus and Lymphoproliferative disease virus (LPDV) in turkeys.  While turkeys are still being affected throughout the state, numbers with the debilitating clinical lesions in the head/eye area appear minimal.

NH Hunting Report - December 21, 2016

The unofficial deer kill for New Hampshire’s 2016 hunting season was 10,702, down slightly (2%) from the 2015 final kill of 10,895. Based on this estimate, the 2016 total represents the 7th highest kill in the last 9 years and is very similar to the 20-year average of 10,912.  Deer hunting seasons are now closed in the state.

Changes to Permanent Hunting/Fishing Licenses Coming in 2017

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is reminding hunters and anglers of changes to permanent license laws that go into effect starting on January 1, 2017. A permanent hunting and fishing license is currently available to Vermont residents aged 65 and older for a one-time fee of $50. Starting January 1, the eligible age will be raised to 70 and the license will be free.

The 2nd weekend at Deer Camp

Dad, Big Buck Down. “What??” My dad says. Dad, BIG…. BUCK…. DOWN. “I am on my way!”

For many, Deer Hunting consists of family traditions and gatherings and for my family, it is no different. The 2nd weekend of Deer Camp kicks off with the annual Friday Night Prime Rib Dinner down in Aitkin. From there we head off to the McGregor Area to start a weekend full of deer hunting at our Family Cabin.

 

Saturday morning, I settled into my deer stand only to be faced with a very strong SSW wind gusting up to 22 mph. As I wait for the clear night sky to wake up, I sat there reminiscing about all the deer I have harvested from this deer stand that I call “The Grand Stand”. While I hope today will be the day where I can talk about another successful hunt.

How Dock Fishing, Can Make You a Better Ice Angler

Most people these days, have a "flasher" style fish finder that they use for ice fishing, but when the season is over, they put that flasher away and don't think about it until the temps start dropping again the next year.

According to Deer Biologist Dan Bergeron, deer breeding activity is picking up, so the next few weeks should provide prime hunting opportunities.  With this upswing in breeding activity, some beautiful deer have already been taken in the northern part of the state.  While collecting data at a bio-check station at L.L. An October Tradition...In the Marsh

Having been born and raised in Northwestern Ontario, hunting and fishing were natural fits for me considering the endless opportunities for both. I currently have a serious obsession with smallmouth bass, however, that has not always been the case. As a youngster, fall was the time of year I coveted most. 2016 NH Youth Deer Hunt Weekend Results

Preliminary reports show that young hunters succeeded in harvesting 246 deer during the 2016 Youth Deer Hunt Weekend in New Hampshire, down 37% from the official 2015 total of 391. This unofficial total does not include information from all registration stations.  The 2016 total is below the average since the special youth deer hunt began in 1999.

$30,000 in grants available to support Community Tree Programs

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), in partnership with the United States Forest Service and the Rhode Island Tree Council, today announced $30,000 is available in matching grants to support local tree programs. A Request for Proposals is now open - with a deadline of December 30, 2016. The Big Pond

Fishing will often test your limits physically and more so emotionally. There is nothing worse than looking down at your graph knowing you see the fish and not getting it to bite.

 

Big ol’ Mille Lacs was a tough one on this windy fall day. That didn’t stop my fishing partner Zach Scully and I from fighting the bitter south wind. The constant cloud cover made for a gloomy morning and, a solid 4-6 mph wind stayed all morning and reminded us winter is truly coming.

72% of Hunters Successful in 2016 New Hampshire Moose Hunt

New Hampshire’s 2016 moose season wrapped up on Sunday, October 23. While hunters have until close of business today to register their moose at New Hampshire Fish and Game headquarters or regional offices, preliminary figures show that 52 hunters succeeded in taking their moose during the 9-day season. With a total of 72 permits issued, this represents a statewide success rate of 72%.  That compares with last year's (2015) overall success rate of 69%.

Vermont Bald Eagles Nest in Record Numbers in 2016

Bald eagles produced 34 successful young in Vermont in 2016, smashing the most recent record of 26 in 2013 according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. The birds remain on the list of species protected under Vermont’s state endangered species law, but this strong year has conservationists hopeful for their continued recovery.

Northern MN Grouse

I had long anticipated heading to Northern MN, to Beltrami State Forest, to get my labs out for the first time chasing grouse. Normally, we hit this part of the state in the fall for bear hunting, but with my tag already filled from another area, and reading that bird numbers in the state were up, I wanted to get out and try some trails. In previous years we would see several ruffed and spruce grouse in the area and would often times have our limit while out setting baits.

Waterfowl Weekend

Well over the long weekend, we spent our time out in Western MN waterfowl hunting. Hoping to get under a few birds, we were pretty confident.

We hunted ducks the first morning, lots of ducks entered the little lake we were hunting but didn't want to decoy as well as we were hoping, so, we made the decision every water fowler avoids to make at the early hours of the morning, we pulled the decoys and moved to where the birds wanted to be.

Finesse or Not

With many more states starting to regulate the lead use in our fishing tackle, more time is spent finding these alternative material baits. There are a few flavors that are popping up lately these days, but the tried and true ones, that are leading the pack, are the Tungsten jigs.

Lynx Spotted in Southern Vermont

A lone Canada lynx was photographed in the southern Vermont town of Londonderry this June, marking the first confirmed evidence of lynx in Vermont outside the Northeast Kingdom in decades. Lynx are listed as ‘threatened’ under the federal Endangered Species Act and ‘endangered’ in the state of Vermont.

Youth Deer Hunting Day is Saturday, October 22

On Saturday, October 22, young hunters across the state get their own day to hunt deer. “Hunting is a wonderful way to learn about conservation, responsibility, patience and respect for our vast natural resources,” said Chandler Woodcock, Commissioner, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, “And youth deer hunting day gives all hunters an opportunity to share that with a young hunter.”

Hubbard Farms Wildlife Management Area and Cartop Boat Access to Be Gated Due to Vandalism

The NH Fish and Game Department will erect a gate near the entrance of the Hubbard Farms Wildlife Management Area (WMA), located in North Walpole, NH. The gate will be installed during the first week of November and will remain closed until further notice, restricting vehicular access to the WMA. As the property also provides access to the Connecticut River for paddle craft, parking for three to four cars will be created near the road to afford continued access for pedestrians and paddle craft activities. American's with Disabilities Act-compliant access will be available around the gate.

Fall Panfish on Tungsten Baits

Fall fishing means water temperatures are dropping and the fish are going into a feeding mode in preparation for the upcoming winter. These fish are roaming and searching for available food and that is key for finding these feeding fish.

Public Hearing on Revisions to NH's Threatened and Endangered Species Lists

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the lists of threatened and endangered species in New Hampshire.  The proposal also affects wildlife control operators and limits on the take of certain fish.  The public hearing will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at 6:00 p.m., at Fish and Game Department Headquarters, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, NH 03301. Fishing Report October 15, 16 2016 Massachusetts

Fall time fishing can go either way when the waters start dipping into the 40’s, one day they are feeding and other days, you can’t buy a bite. But with the conditions right now, most water temperatures are in the low 60’s to upper 50’s and that means the feed bags are on.

Since we are still in these ranges, this allows us to target a couple of different species with crappies to start one day and moving onto the bass the next. So far this fall season, we haven’t had that many cold days or nights and this is keeping the waters warmer and the fish more active.

N.H. Moose Hunt Opening Weekend Brings 26% Success

New Hampshire’s moose hunters achieved a 26% success rate during the first two days of the nine-day season. Opening weekend (October 15 and 16) saw a total of 19 moose taken by hunters statewide -- 18 bulls and one cow.

The word is out that the crappie are putting on their feed bags and the schools are definitely forming. As these fish start preparing for winter, finding the schools with better sized fish is key and always makes for a great day of fishing.

Reminder Regarding Pheasant Season Closures

With the start of the pheasant hunting season on October 1, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department reminds pheasant hunters that due to safety concerns, all pheasant stocking sites will be closed to pheasant hunting until noon statewide on both Thursday and Friday of the first three weeks of the season. The specific dates on which all pheasant sites will be closed until noon are October 6-7, 13-14, and 20-2, 2016. No pheasant hunting within our stocked sites should occur before noon on those dates.

Fishing Report September 24 2016 Massachusetts

Fall time is one of the prime times for fishing, spring is as well, for being able to catch numbers of fish, but more importantly, bigger fish. This time of year the fish, especially crappies, start schooling together and finding the schools that have the better sizes is key.
As the waters cool, their tendencies are to school up and start roaming the basins of the lake. Reading your electronics is key to finding these schools and once you do, following them keeps you in the action.

Water temperatures are key as well since if they are still in the low 70’s, these schools are still fairly small and scattered. Once the waters get into the 60’s to 50’s, this is when the schools increase in size and are somewhat easier to find.

Volunteers Needed for Stream Restoration Workday at Falls Brook

Thanks to a team of conservation partners, an undersized culvert at Hale Hill Road in Swanzey has just been replaced with a new, flood-resilient and wildlife-friendly open-bottom arch crossing. This exciting stream restoration project will re-connect more than 20 miles of stream habitat for wild brook trout, dace and other aquatic wildlife. The final step is to re-vegetate the shoreline of Falls Brook nearest the construction site with native, locally grown, edible plants.

There is definitely a hint of fall in the... air but it doesn’t stay around long enough for cooling the lakes water temperatures. We are still looking at water in the low 70’s and these 80 degree days are not helping this cause, as the fish are still in a scattered mode.

Wanted to start cashing in on the fall crappie bite fishing as they tend to group up into bigger schools and are easier to find on the electronics and also are in a feeding frenzy. The fish that I did find were still in very small groups, which meant only catching a fish or two and then move on to finding the next school.

Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock Seasons Start October 1

The hunting season for ruffed grouse – New Hampshire’s most sought-after upland game bird – starts October 1 and runs through December 31. Karen Bordeau, Fish and Game’s Small Game Project Leader, notes that better than 60% of small game hunting effort in New Hampshire is directed towards ruffed grouse, and that over half of that effort takes place in the North Country.  Hunting for woodcock, another popular upland game bird runs from October 1 through November 14.

NH High School Bass Fishing Tournaments Set For Sept. 22 and Oct. 1

Students from around New Hampshire will soon be competing for top honors in a high school bass fishing tournament. A qualifying tournament with 41 registered schools will take place on Thursday, September 22, out of Lee’s Mills on Lake Winnipesaukee. The top third of the schools from the qualifying round will move onto the state finals tournament on Saturday, October 1, on Lake Winnisquam.

NH Bear Season Off to an Average Start; Hunters Asked to Refrain from Shooting Collared Bears

The New Hampshire bear hunting season, which started September 1, is off to an average start in terms of harvest rate. The statewide harvest to date is estimated at 300 bears, but numbers are preliminary at this early point in the season. Despite low food abundance this summer, many critical fall bear foods have recently become available due to modest or above-average production.

NH Fishing Report - September 13, 2016

Let’s hope the heat of summer is far behind us now.  Fish like lake trout and crappies will be setting up in their “fall mode,” so try deep water jigging for them.  As air and water temperatures cool, trout action should pick up a little, provided some much-needed rain arrives.  It is “terrestrial time” for the avid fly angler so give those hopper, beetle, and ant imitations a try.  Watch for the fall migration of stripers on the coast. DEEP Lifts Fish Consumption Advisory on Stretch of Quinnipiac River in Southington

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today lifted the fish consumption advisory for a stretch of the Quinnipiac River in Southington, saying laboratory test results show no evidence of contamination from a chemical spill last week in the waters or banks of the river.

VT Fish & Wildlife Celebrates 30 Years of Vermont Duck Stamp Program

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is holding a celebration to highlight the successes of the Vermont Duck Stamp Program over three decades at a newly conserved property in Colchester, Vt. The celebration will be at the Mallet’s Creek Wildlife Management Area on Thursday, September 8, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Hunt for the Hungry: Food Bank Seeks Meat Donations from Hunters

New Hampshire hunters can share their fall harvest with the needy through the “Hunt for the Hungry” program at the New Hampshire Food Bank.  Once again this fall, the food bank is collecting donations of whole or processed game animals for distribution to more than 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and group homes statewide.

DEEP Says Avoid Contact With and Fish Consumption From Stretch of Quinnipiac River in Southington

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) said today that people should not eat fish taken from a stretch of the Quinnipiac River in Southington until results from water quality tests are available to assess the impact of the release of a chemical substance Wednesday from a plant near the river in that town.

Fishing Report August 21 2016 Massachusetts

Hot summer, high water temperatures, equals fish are living deep right now. The better quality fish are hanging on deep structure nearing the thermal clime for ...much more comfortable water temperatures for themselves.

The best locations that I am finding right now are deep water humps that have some sparse weed growth as well as other items on the hump. If there are some isolated rocks, this is a key spot on a spot and the fish are always going to be relating to this.

New Hampshire Hunting Seasons Start September 1

New Hampshire's hunting seasons kick off on September 1 with the opening of black bear and gray squirrel seasons. Archery seasons for turkey and white-tailed deer get underway September 15. The statewide resident Canada goose hunt runs September 1-25, 2016.

Massabesic Lake - Manchester Water Works Trailer Ramps Closed Due to Low Water Levels

New Hampshire Fish and Game was informed today that the Manchester Water Works are temporarily closing the two public ramps they control for trailered-boat access to Lake Massabesic until further notice.  The ramps are located on (1) Manchester (Candia) Road near the Fair Haven Church and (2) Chester Road (Route 121) near the Auburn Town Offices.  NH Fish and Game does not have any ramps on Lake Massabesic.
