Fishing report February 27 2009

It has been almost a week since hitting the ice and with the weather getting very warm was time to hit the ice again. There has been a lake that I have wanted to try for a long time that have not fished in the winter and is known to have big smallmouth bass, jumbo perch and big slab crappies.

With temps getting near 60 degrees how could I pass this up as anytime you can be on the ice with this warmth, being out there is great feeling. Of course when you get temps like this that means you are going to have winds and man was there wind, gusts over 40 mph and they were there the whole day. The snow has all melted and there was plenty of water on top of the ice with also the top layer starting to honeycomb.

Icing Chubby Bass

Anglers in the winter months target many varieties of fish species that range from panfish, perch, sunfish and crappies to bigger game fish such as pickerel and bass. Here in New England running traps, tip-ups, for the bigger game fish is the norm, but those that want a little more variety should try jigging for bass.

There are a variety of different jigs on the market to target bass with from jigging spoons to jerk style baits. One of these baits, which have been working very well for us this ice season, is the Salmo Chubby Darter. These baits are used a lot in the Midwest for jigging up walleyes but have been working wonders here in New England for large and smallmouth bass.

MassWildlife gets funds to help programs

Thanks to $740.9 million in federal funds raised from nationwide excise taxes and import duties on all things outdoors — from fuel to fishing rods — the Mass. Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) will receive roughly $7.3 million to help fund recreational fishing restoration, improve boater access and hunter education courses in 2009.

Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar made the announcement Monday as part of the government’s Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration (WSFR) programs.

“The funds raised under the programs have helped conserve our fish and wildlife resources and provide opportunities for outdoor recreation for more than half a century,” Salazar said. “All those who pay into this program — the hunting and fishing industries, boaters, hunters, anglers, and recreational shooters — should take pride in helping to conserve our land and its fish and wildlife.”

Fishing report February 21 2009

Time to head back to New Hampshire and search for more of the bass that swim in this lake. Had a great time the last time we were there with getting my son into some bass fishing utilizing tip-ups and rod/reel to catch his fish. He enjoyed the tip-up version much more and was a better choice for him on that outing.

Today he was not going to venture to the lake with me as I was planning a full day on the ice with cold temps and high winds that blew all day long. I wanted to fish the area that had yielded my biggest bass of the season but unfortunately there was already a group of anglers staking out the area with their tip-ups.

They had positioned themselves all around and over the flat that laid there and my decision was to stay in the area and concentrated a little north of them. I hadn’t fished this particular spot before and after drilling a number of holes, found that the flat drops sharply off in this area and thought that may be the ticket.

White Nose Syndrome Seen in Bats in N.H. Hibernaculum

Residents Asked to Report Bats Seen Flying in Winter

More bad news for bats in New England: Though their findings have not yet been confirmed by lab testing, bat researchers monitoring New Hampshire's hibernating bats have found early signs of White Nose Syndrome (WNS) in bats at a mine in the Northwest part of the state. Biologists from N.H. Fish and Game's Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program and all across the region are involved in tracking WNS, which was discovered just two years ago and appears to be nearly always fatal to bats.

During their surveys of winter hibernacula (hibernating places, typically caves and mines), researchers took photographs of hibernating bats. In the images from one mine where hundreds of bats hibernate, several bats had the characteristic white fungus on their muzzles. "We don't know whether the cold-loving white fungus is a symptom of WNS or the cause," said Emily Brunkhurst, biologist with the Nongame Program. "We also don't know exactly how the syndrome spreads," she added, "but we do know that the white fungus is the first sign that it has arrived. In other hibernacula, when the white fungus has been seen, it's only a matter of time before a high percentage of the bats are affected. The fungus spreads from their faces to their wings and tails, their behavior changes, they use up their stores of body fat and get very skinny. And they die."

There's no business like snow business...

OK, so you had a few days last week with the early morning smell of spring in the air, and everyone you spoke with talked about spring. You probably sat outside at lunch or even went for a comfortable walk in short sleeves thinking for a few hours that you could hang up the down jacket. Well, don't be fooled, folks, we still have a lot of winter ahead of us this season. How do I know this? Because I am a New Englander and I know that's the way it is! Currently, it's in the teens and snowing, so by the time you read this, you may have just come in from shoveling several inches of wet, heavy snow.

Ice fishing derby coming to Artichoke in Newburyport MA

NEWBURYPORT — For the first time in more than a decade, an ice fishing derby is coming back to the Artichoke Resevoir.

The Essex County Sportmen's Association is hosting the Artichoke Ice Fishing Derby on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The tournament will award the biggest bass and pickerel with a $150 prize. There will be a $100 prize for second and $75 for third-biggest in each species. For the largest miscellaneous species, the prize will be $50.

At the end of the tournament, there will be a special raffle.

Entrants can sign up at the parking area on Turkey Hill Road. Entry fee is $20 per angler. Per Massachusetts Fish and Game regulations, each angler will be allowed five ice fishing traps. Food will also be on sale, but fishermen must bring their own bait.

Fishing report February 18 2009

Now that my son has been bitten by the ice fishing bug, ice is flowing through his veins and being it is vacation week, he wants to get out as much as possible. He hasn’t had much luck in bass fishing in the summer months and I have been doing fairly well lately in that department, this is something that he wants to do, catch a bass through the ice.

Typically when I take him along fishing, I don’t plan on fishing much myself and just want him to get the most out of every trip. This one was no different but at the same time I wanted to catch some bass as well but this was his day. We headed back to New Hampshire and across the lake we went and thankfully the snow is gone and making traveling on the ice that much easier for the long walk ahead.

Fishing report February 15 2009

My son really wanted to get out on the ice and the few times he has been out we have been catching smaller sunfish and crappies. This trip was to head to a great crappie pond and search for some slabs and the best bite is usually in the afternoon. So the plan was set and adrenaline running high with the anticipation of getting into those slab crappies.

This particular pond has yielded his best crappie at 14.5 inches last ice season and all he talks about is catching one that is bigger. I have been there a couple of times this winter and only in the morning with marginal results and the big crappies were void pretty much for morning activity. So figured that being he wants a big slabber, we will hit it at prime time and mid to late afternoon.

120 ACRES IN SOUTHERN RHODE ISLAND PRESERVED

Charlestown, R.I. (February 18, 2009) - Today, members of the Rhode Island congressional delegation, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, The Conservation Fund and The Nature Conservancy announced the protection of 120 acres of wildlife habitat in southern Rhode Island.

The unique conservation deal involves two separate properties. The 48-acre Camp Pastore property, located in Charlestown, sits along the northwestern shore of Watchaug Pond. The property, originally part of Burlingame State Park, was transferred to the state Department of Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals (MHRH) in 1986. Now the property has returned to DEM control and inclusion back into the state park. In South Kingstown, 72 acres of previously state-owned land known as the Stedman property fronts Pettaquamscutt Cove and is adjacent to John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge, which is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS).

As with real estate, location is everything. The view may or may not matter. Some bobhouses don't even have windows. I also think the pleasure of having one involves a sort of homesteader feeling.

If you can access the ice, you have every right to claim a spot out there. Claim that space before anyone else, and it's yours — until April 1 of course when N.H. Fish & Game revokes that privilege each year. Until next season that is.

Whether you call it a bobhouse, ice shanty, ice shack, fish house or home away from home, these places are as important to a guy as that man cave in their basement for watching televised sports.

Fishing Report February 11 2009

With a beautiful day in store with light winds and 50 degree weather predicted it was time to venture north once again. We usually get a few days where the weather turns very nice and mild in the middle of winter and why not spend a day on the ice enjoying what Mother Nature gives us.

Wanted to try a couple of other areas that I frequent in the summer months and I haven’t been to yet this winter. The area that I started in was a cove off of the main lake and is deep on the front side with the backside having some shallow rock shoals. With the water levels down a few feet one of the shoals was sticking through the ice and that is where I had started.

Freedom Maine Man Catches Record-Setting White Perch

A Freedom man caught a record 3.02-pound white perch at Ellis Pond in Freedom in December, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife fisheries biologists.

Fishing Report February 9 2009

With only a few hours to fish and needing to get that fix of a tug on the end of the line, decided to head over to a local pond that I frequent a lot with my son. Usually we can go there and have a successful day no matter the conditions as these fish are generally in the deepest part of the lake and that is where I concentrated my efforts.

With the warming temps the snow on top of the ice is disappearing quickly and making lake access very easy these days. This particular pond usually gets a lot of activity over the weekends and could see that people were out and had holes drilled every where. Seen some holes peppered over and around an underwater point and figured I might as well check them first and that way I didn’t have to drill any holes.

Fishing report February 6 2009

Seems lately one trip is for panfish and then the next trip will be for bass and this has been giving me some nice variety of fish being caught this winter. So this trip was back to New Hampshire in search of bass again and decided to work the last area a little more looking for that big bass once again.

Wanted to spend the day working more of the last area and once again was rewarded with numbers of fish but size definitely was down. Numbers were still there for the amount of time that I spent there, but an angler is always looking for that big fish to bite. The conditions were definitely a little different as a cold front took over New England and it was in the single digits as well as very windy.

Meredith, NH man wins both top derby prizes

The top two prizes in the 2009 Great Rotary Fishing Derby went to the same man, Regis Mazerolle of Meredith, who said he landed both of his prize-winning tagged rainbow trout from the same ice fishing hole.

Mazerolle landed both fish Saturday, a 1.8-pound rainbow, which won the top prize, an 18-foot sport boat package valued at $25,000, and a 1.56-pound rainbow for second prize, an ATV package valued at $6,500.

"It was just luck. Just luck," Mazerolle said last night. "There were 10 guys there and I was the only guy who caught two fish. I caught them within fifteen minutes (of each other)."

Fishing report February 2 2009

After having great day ice fishing with my on Sunday I wanted to go and scout some other waters and get a feel for his next trip out. Went to a pond that we frequent a lot and harbors some very nice fish as well with crappies above average in size and sunfish that are bigger as well.

Generally we fish this pond mainly in the afternoon and that is the better time that the crappies start moving around while they are feeding. Unfortunately I have not been able to get to this pond in the afternoon yet and this is my second trip there in the morning. Last year never fished it in the morning so covering waters that I generally fish in the afternoon searching for the bigger crappie that swim in this pond.

Check that Ice Line

Many anglers across the ice belt have been enjoying numbers of days out on the ice catching fish. But, there is one item that gets over looked by many and that is the fishing line that we have spooled on our reels. Fishing through a hole in the ice, the edges of the hole are very sharp and will take a toll on our fishing line. Anglers need to be aware of this and continuously be checking the line every time that we hit the ice. The ice is very hard on the line and will put nicks into it and this may cause you to lose a good fish during the battle. Every time that I go out I take a moment and check a handful of feet of the line for these nicks and if found will remove that section of line. Also, the knot needs to be check each time out and during the day as well. We don't want to sacrifice a good fish for not checking the knots and it only takes a few seconds to retie if the need arises. So take a few moments and check your fishing line before going out the next time and enjoy a day on the ice.

Derby upcoming in Marlboro Massachusetts

The Green Water Wizards fishing club will hold its 28th annual ice fishing derby, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Fort Meadow Reservoir in Marlboro.

Lottery applications are now available for the adventure of a lifetime - hunting moose in New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's 2009 moose hunt lottery is open! The nonrefundable entry fee is $15 for New Hampshire residents and $25 for nonresidents. New Hampshire's moose hunt is nine days long, starting the third Saturday in October. This year's hunt runs from October 17-25, 2009. The odds of being selected in last year's lottery were 1 in 22 for New Hampshire residents and 1 in 67 for nonresidents, some of the best odds in the nation for moose hunting.

Applications can also be picked up from Fish and Game license agents statewide. Vermont Biologists are Watching Winter Conditions

The cold weather and snow we had in much of Vermont during December and January have state wildlife biologists concerned about survival of deer. Conditions during the remainder of the winter will play a major role in Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department hunting season recommendations for next fall.

“Once again, western Vermont has maintained less snow than the rest of the state, at least until mid-February,” said Dr. Shawn Haskell, Vermont’s deer project leader. “Predictions of a cold dry winter seem about half-right. It has been quite cold, but we have received lots of snow to go with it. It could be worse though. Much of the state experienced 20–30 inches of snowmelt in December. Had that not occurred, the deer might be in trouble already.”

VERY URGENT AND VERY IMPORTANT" was the seemingly overheated subject line of an e-mail from Stripers Forever, a group dedicated to making the striped bass a protected game fish (only limited recreational fishing allowed).

Could Russian factory ships be parked at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay scooping up every last migrating striper in nets the size of Rhode Island?

Thankfully, the Russians have stayed home, but for striper-loving anglers the real subject of the message is almost as alarming.

My dog Molly got me up at 3 o'clock in the morning the other day because she had to make a nature call. Since I get up every morning at 4 a.m., it wasn't that much of an inconvenience. However, I think she has me trained. Because I got up and took her out. Why couldn't she wait?

Anyway, after we got outside, the rooster that lives down the road started to ****-a-doodle-doo. Since dawn wasn't for a couple of hours, I thought that to be sort of strange (my mom didn't raise any dummies). Then the geese that live a few hundred yards from me began to squawk. Now my backyard sounded like a barnyard and my basset hound was sniffing the air as she seemed to know that something was new to the neighborhood. Then I heard it. That eerie sound that tells you a coyote is seeking companions. It's a yip-yip yelp sound that can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Normally when a coyote yelps he is seeking others to join him in hunting, and I assumed that with all the deer in my area it was probably to help weed out one of them.

Fishing report February 1 2009

Finally found some time that the kids weren’t doing something with any of their activities or other family obligations and my son was more than ready to hit the ice. When taking my son ice fishing I generally stay somewhat close to home so that if things aren’t working out or he is ready to leave it won’t take long to get home. So we headed to a pond that we frequent often that has an abundance of crappies, sunfish and perch but the sizes are generally not huge but fish can be caught frequently.
