Use Caution on the Ice

New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials urge outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution when enjoying winter activities near the ice.

"Caution is in order for those going out onto the ice, especially early in the winter," said Fish and Game Col. Kevin Jordan. "With uneven temperatures, some areas may look safe, but don’t count on it. We are urging people to check the ice thickness before you go out onto any frozen waterbody."

First Ice Slab Crappies

Ice has finally formed and really feels good to be able to fish through an ice hole once again. With this early ice though, safety becomes a priority and all measures need to be taken to ensure that you are safe while on the ice. Making sure that you have all the necessary safety equipment along with you and having a spud bar in your hand for checking the ice thickness with your every step.

After making our way out to the area that we wanted to start at, it was a great feeling giving the auger some power and watching the ice shavings come out of the first holes of the ice season. Drilling many holes in the area, allowed for hole hopping to commence and the flasher had quickly showed us the holes that were holding some fish.

First Ice: Always a Great Feeling

Finally, there may be a winter this year and hopefully it makes up for the lack of them the last couple of years. First ice always feels good being out there, but at the same time, great safety measures need to be taken as the newly formed ice sheet, will have irregularities to it.

The ice was setting up very nicely with the week of cold temps, then enters a mid-week snow storm leaving 6 inches of snow and that didn’t help the ice conditions. There are patches of snow on the ice and now, those areas need to be avoided as they have slush under them and a SPUD BAR is your best friend.

Opportunities for Winter Anglers

Winter anglers in New Hampshire had some trout stocked especially for them this year. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department stocks trout during the fall months, mostly to bolster the winter ice fishery. This should translate into some exciting action for the state’s anglers this winter, according to Inland Fisheries Division Chief Jason Smith.

Anglers going after trout can find lists of waters that remain open to the taking of trout year round on the Fish and Game website:

Waiting on the Ice

Many locations have tasted their “Ice Season” already, but, there are many of us that have yet to see the ice and are waiting eagerly. So that means, dawning the winter warm gear and hitting the open water for getting our fishing fix in.

By having access to open water yet, this is allowing us to find the areas that the crappie is using and with water temps near the freezing mark, they won’t be moving far come first ice. Using ice fishing strategy, watching the Vexilar flasher, slowly moving the boat around, looking for fish on the screen.

DEM Advises Anglers On Ways To Minimize The Spread Of Largemouth Bass Virus

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is advising anglers of steps they can take to minimize the spread of Largemouth Bass Virus (LMBV). The advisory comes in the wake of confirmation that largemouth bass sampled from Watchaug Pond in Charlestown have tested positive for LMBV.
DEM offers the following suggestions to minimize the spread of LMBV: • Do not transplant bass from one waterbody to another – it is against the law! • Drain, clean, and dry boats, motors, and fishing gear between each use. • Do not release bait fish into any waterbody. • Refrain from catching and releasing bass during periods of high water temperatures. • Report all fish kills to DEM at 222-3070.
